Blending fantasy with the black death a plague tale innocence tells the
the heartfelt survival story of two orphans a messiah and Hugo their dynamic shines against a grim backdrop riddled with corpses Inquisition soldiers out for blood and thousands of plague-carrying rats.

A plague tale does an admirable job of making its young protagonists appropriately vulnerable to the
surrounding dangers but the stealth gameplay and puzzles rarely feel imaginative as a result the stakes of this seemingly perilous world are undercut the siblings never had much of a relationship growing up as mid 14th century French Nobles but when a messiah is suddenly forced into the role of young Hugo's protector they quickly need to learn to trust one another this theme drives the story in interesting directions and is also smartly reflected through the gameplay the majority of the 17 linear chapters see you controlling a Mesa with Hugo holding on to your hand.

By default one of the best aspects of a plague tale is its world which has an ominous emptiness to it well besides the overwhelming waves of terrifying rats most of the living people that you come across want to kill amusia Hugo and various
companions that help you throughout their journey this foreboding atmosphere matches the dreariness of the areas you'll explore though they all look far more daunting than they are a plague tale sometimes feels like it's nudging you towards safety rather than letting you get the full picture of it's fascinating environments.

What is shown of the setting at the very least help elevate a story that mixes real history with bits of fantasy in surprising ways a plague tale is about keeping a low profile soldiers kill you in one hit so much of your time is spent sneaking with the help of diversions created by throwing rocks and pots while sneaking his King Alesia does have a weapon at her disposal a sling that flings rocks at enemies sneaking past guards is always a cleaner way to go about business though most of the combat sequences resemble puzzles instead of relying on fast reflexes.

It's about figuring out an ideal sequence for dispatching enemies bosses with the exception of the fantastic final showdown abandon this concept in favour of enclosed action that can feel somewhat awkward as a result where things get interesting is when rats the main puzzle mechanic are added to the equation, the orphans are only safe from their gnawing teeth when surrounded by light these puzzles are visually in 10 and pretty gross but they aren't as demanding as they look carrying torches and lit sticks repel rats and Ameesha can light lanterns and fire pits from afar with her inner fire alchemy ability a contrasting ability can extinguish flames to sick rats on the soldiers in the absence of light sources and ISA can create temporary attraction points with alchemy or even kill a small group altogether unfortunately even as areas and puzzles grow in complexity it's typically very clear which ability you need to use puzzles are often set up specifically for one ability or sequence of abilities and because you can find more than enough supplies throughout each level a plague tale never really encourages you to make efficient strategies you can be careless and wasteful and upgrades from workbenches make resource management even less important.

A plague tales use of these crafting and skill systems isn't tedious but both features lower the stakes by making everything too convenient and removing the need to make tough
decisions the Companions that am EC and Hugo meet along the way add teamwork to certain puzzles they turn cranks pick locks and knock out soldiers enemies seize command these scenarios don't add much depth but their presence helps the unfolding story the dialogue from critical cutscenes to small talk is well-written and acted shut up you're going to get us killed a plague tales storey of two orphans surviving in a world ravaged by the Black Death is compelling and the stealth gameplay that runs through it is fine-tuned but the rat-infested world looks more dangerous than it is everything from the alchemy abilities to the level layouts feel a bit too guided and straightforward and the prevalence of crafting materials removes the need to make strategic decisions for more from a plague tale innocence, you can watch our video with 20 minutes of gameplay or for another linear adventure game watch our review of close to the Sun and for everything else keep it right here on IGN.
